Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@fegrooming.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

We offer a variety of pet grooming services, including baths, haircuts, nail trims, and ear cleaning.

We take cash, check and Venmo. Unfortunately we do not take credit cards.

We like to take out time with your dog so they have a nice little spa day.  Typically grooming takes about 3 to 4 hours, although if your dog is matted, larger or uncooperative it may take longer. If you have a time constraint, we will try to work with you.

Unfortunately not. For our safety, insurance purposes, as well as your pets safety we ask that you do not stay. Dogs frequently are more anxious when their owners are there and they cannot be near them. Do not worry though, in your absence we will love them just as you do!

Grooming is recommend for every breed of dog as it helps maintain a healthy coat but the frequency of grooming depends on the breed and coat type of your pet. We recommend bringing your pet in for grooming every 4-6 weeks. We highly suggest the nails being cut every 3 to 4 weeks, so stop by in between to say hi!

Of course! There's nothing worse than getting a nice clean dog with stinky breath! However, getting your dog's teeth brushed every 6 weeks is not enough. Plaque solidifies on teeth in under 3 days so every other day brushing is highly suggested!

Your pet's nails should be trimmed at a minimum of every two to four weeks. Dogs that regularly walk on pavement tend to wear down on their own and do not need to be trimmed as frequently. Long nails should be cut every 2-3 weeks to help wear down the quicks. The quick is a small vein that runs in the nail. If this is cut it can cause bleeding and pain for your dog.

No. We do not sedate. If a dog is too agitated we will not force them to be groomed. We like to have a bond with your pet and make it a pleasurable experience. There are times that we may recommend asking your veterinarian for something to help calm your pet down.

Mats are when the hair is in a "clump". Matted fur is very painful for a dog, giving your dog a feeling that someone is constantly pulling their hair. To prevent matting, brushing your dog every day and frequent grooming is required. There is a right and wrong way to brush certain types of coats along with the proper tools to use. So please ask us for suggestions!

Brushing out mats is extremely painful for your dog, time consuming and pricey. Often, if a dog is matted they have skin issues such as fungus or irritation. We will do what we can to leave the hair as long as possible but sometimes a close shave is necessary.  We will always do what is best for your pet. Comfort over Vanity is our motto when it comes to matted dogs.

Matting is caused by a number of thing:

1. Improper brushing. If you are not sure if you are using the proper tools or doing it correctly, please feel free to ask your groomer.

2. Bathing: If you bathe your pet at home, no matter what you use, if the hair is not COMPLETELY COMBED OUT before and after the bath, any mats or tangles can become worse by the wetting/drying process.

3. Shedding: Even "non-shedding" breeds such as Poodles and Shih Tzus really do shed, however, the dead hair gets tangled up with the live coat. If not brushed out regularly, it will eventually form mats.

This is a service business. We provide a services just like waitress, waiters and hair dressers. The percentage is the same. But if gratuity is not in your budget then of course a sincere compliment on the work that was done to your pet is always greatly appreciated.

We get this question a lot... here's a few reasons why:

  1. Your hairdresser doesn’t wash and clean your rear end. Look up “expressing anal glands”.
  2. You don’t go eight weeks - or more - without washing or brushing your hair. Some go annually! Or never!! Your hairdresser doesn’t [usually] have to deal with matted hair behind your ears or, well, any other part of your body.
  3. Your hairdresser doesn’t give you a sanitary trim (trimming your bum hair). You probably don’t even show your bum to your hairdresser.
  4. Your hairdresser doesn’t clean your ears. It might be nice but I doubt your hairdresser offers this service. And not every pet likes this part (see #9).
  5. Your hairdresser doesn’t remove boogers from your eyes or deal with you drooling all over the place.
  6. You sit still for your hairdresser. Well, probably. But, you aren’t [usually] at risk of running off or fighting with someone at the next table. You’re not a flight risk, are you?
  7. Your haircut doesn’t include a manicure or pedicure. All 4 feet. some groomers get limited time to do this or the pet objects (see #9).
  8. Your hairdresser only washes and cuts the hair on your head. A full body bath and shampoo would be amazing - I think - but the bigger the pet the more there is to wash. This also means extra large bath tub and lifting… does your hairdresser lift you into the chair/table or tub? I think not.
  9. You don’t bite your hairdresser. Little nips or outright biting is not usually a risk with you. You don’t, right?
  10. You don’t pee or poop in the tub, or on the hairdresser. I hope.
  11. You’re probably well behaved, aren’t you? Many pets are not thrilled with the whole idea even if they’re in a good mood. Some are afraid of everything new or different or loud (hair dryer, scissors, etc.) noises.

Some dogs require two people to groom. Other dogs bark the entire time they aren’t being handled. And even then…

Special cages and drying equipment is also needed.

A puppy cut can mean several different things. Typically a puppy cut means the same length all over but it can be entirely different lengths and styles. If you aren't sure what you want for a hair cut, budget a little extra time for us to go through and plan ahead!
